Signs You Have an Exhaust Leak or Failing Muffler

Exhaust problems announce themselves — you just have to know what you're hearing and smelling. Catch a small exhaust leak early and it's an affordable fix; let it go and it can take out oxygen sensors, catalytic converters, and your fuel mileage along the way. Time to fix an exhaust leak if you notice:

• Louder engine noise: A ticking, popping, or roaring sound — especially on cold starts or under acceleration — is the classic sound of exhaust gas escaping before the muffler.
• Exhaust smell in the cabin: If you smell fumes inside the vehicle, stop driving it and get it looked at. Exhaust gases in the cabin are a carbon monoxide risk, not just an annoyance.
• Rattling or clunking underneath: Broken hangers, loose heat shields, or internal muffler baffles knocking around — cheap to fix now, expensive to ignore.
• Hissing or tapping at idle: A small manifold or gasket leak often ticks when the engine is cold and quiets down as the metal expands — that doesn't mean it healed.
• Drop in fuel economy: A leak upstream of the oxygen sensors skews the readings and makes the engine run rich. Your wallet notices before your ears do.
• Check engine light: O2 sensor and catalyst efficiency codes are frequently caused by an exhaust leak, not a failed sensor. We diagnose before we replace parts.
• Visible rust or soot: Black soot streaks at a joint or flaking rust on the muffler or pipes means the leak is already there or about to be.
