Know the Signs

Signs Your Vehicle Needs Brake Service

Brakes rarely fail all at once — they warn you first. Catch these symptoms early and a brake job is routine maintenance; ignore them and pads take rotors with them, and rotors take calipers. If any of these sound familiar, book a brake inspection:

• Squealing or screeching: Most brake pads have wear indicators that squeal on purpose when the pad is nearly done. That noise is your cheapest warning.
• Grinding metal-on-metal: The pad material is gone and the backing plate is chewing into the rotor. Stop driving on it — every mile adds cost.
• Pulsing or shaking when braking: A vibrating pedal or shaking steering wheel under braking usually means warped or unevenly worn rotors.
• Soft or spongy pedal: A pedal that sinks or feels mushy points to old brake fluid, air in the lines, or a hydraulic problem — all inspection-now territory.
• Pulling to one side: The vehicle drifts left or right under braking — often a sticking caliper or collapsed brake hose clamping one side harder than the other.
• Longer stopping distances: If it takes noticeably more room to stop than it used to, don't wait for the reason to get louder.
• Brake warning light: ABS or brake lights on the dash mean the system has already flagged a fault worth diagnosing properly.
