Modern vehicles are rolling computer networks. Dozens of sensors feed the engine computer every second, and one bad connection, chafed wire, or faulty sensor can throw the whole system off — rough idle, poor fuel economy, hard starts, a check engine light that won't stay off. Electrical problems don't get better on their own, and throwing parts at them gets expensive fast.

At Wisco Speed & Performance, automotive electronics are part of our daily work. We wire complete EFI conversions and engine builds from scratch, so tracing a factory harness or pinning down a faulty sensor on your daily driver is well inside our comfort zone. We diagnose with a meter, a scan tool, and a wiring diagram — then fix the actual problem, once.

• Check Engine Light Diagnostics: We pull the codes, then do the testing behind them. A code points at a circuit, not a part — we find out whether it's the sensor, the wiring, or something upstream before anything gets replaced.
• Faulty Sensor Diagnosis & Replacement: O2 sensors, crank and cam position sensors, throttle position sensors (TPS), MAF, MAP, coolant temp, knock sensors — tested properly and replaced with quality parts only when they've actually failed.
• Wiring Repair & Harness Work: Chafed insulation, corroded connectors, rodent damage, bad grounds, melted sections — repaired with proper splices, terminals, and loom. No twist-and-tape.
• Battery, Charging & Starting Systems: Battery testing, alternator and starter diagnosis, parasitic draw testing for the battery that keeps dying overnight, and clean cable and ground repairs.
• Custom Wiring for Performance Builds: Standalone harnesses, EFI conversion wiring, sensor and gauge installs, relay and fuse panel work — the electronics side of the engine builds and swaps we do in-house.

Know the Signs

Signs of an Electrical Problem or Failing Sensor

Electrical faults are sneaky — they come and go, they mimic mechanical problems, and they're the reason "we replaced three parts and it still does it" stories exist. Here's what a wiring or sensor problem typically looks like from the driver's seat:

• Check engine light on — or flashing: A steady light means get it diagnosed soon. A flashing light means active misfire and possible catalytic converter damage — ease off and get it in.
• Rough idle, surging, or stalling: A failing crank sensor, dirty MAF, or lazy O2 sensor skews what the computer sees, and the engine runs on bad information.
• Hard starting or intermittent no-start: Crank/cam sensors, a dying starter, corroded battery cables, or a bad ground — all testable, none worth guessing at.
• Battery keeps dying: Could be the battery, could be the alternator, could be a parasitic draw from a module that never sleeps. We test for all three before recommending anything.
• Drop in fuel economy: Worn O2 sensors quietly cost you mileage for months before they ever set a code.
• Flickering lights, dead accessories, blown fuses: Classic wiring symptoms — shorts, chafed harnesses, and corroded connectors that only get worse with Wisconsin winters and road salt.
• Codes that keep coming back: If a sensor has been replaced and the same code returns, the problem is almost always in the wiring or connector — exactly the diagnosis most shops skip.
